| METROLOGY
LABORATORY Metrology Laboratory of DGSM under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry of the Government of Sultanate of Oman is the National Metrology Laboratory of Oman responsible for Legal an Industrial Metrology activities in Sultanate of Oman (See below) National Laws & Regulations - Royal Decree No.38/74 concerning replacing all mass measuring units used in the Sultanate of Oman with Kilogram and its multiples and sub-multiples. - Royal Decree No.15/75 concerning replacing all measuring units used in the sultanate of Oman with SI Units. - Royal Decree No.74/90 and Royal Decree No.34/95 concerning the National Law for Measurerment System and Legal Metrology Responsibilities and Function of Metrology Laboratory The responsibilities and functions of Metrology Laboratory are as below: - Maintaining the National Measurement standards and ensuring their International traceability. - Establishing hierarchy and traceability of standards and their periodic calibration. - Preparation and issuance of specifications and regulations on Legal Metrology. - Inspection and calibration of mass and other measures used in commercial transactions. - Calibration of instruments used in industry for length, mass, pressure, volume, and temperature. - Calibration of mass and other physico-mechanical standards for production units and service utilities and issue calibration certificates. - Providing consultancy service to the manufacturers and users of measuring instruments and Equipment. - Provide up-to-date information on units of measurement and calibration techniques of mass and other physico-mechanical standards. Metrology Laboratory Units
- A formal request for calibration on the required form (to be obtained from DGSM) should be submitted. - The equipment submitted for calibration should be accompanied with necessary operation and handling instructions. - The equipment to be calibrated should be clean and should be uniquely identified, wherever practicable by permanent marking on the equipment itself. - Calibration may be carried out on site for the equipment difficult to move from the installed position; in such cases additional charges over and above those stated in the calibration fees will be levied - The equipment should be returned for periodical calibration on the date specified on the previous calibration certificate. - The laboratory may refuse to calibrate equipment for which it is realized during the calibration process that it is impossible to complete measurement for any reasons.
