The laboratory undertakes the physical and mechanical testing, wherever it is appropriate, of almost all building materials ranging from aggregates, cements, limes, soils and bitumen to manufactured products such as concrete blocks, concrete cubes, kerbstones, cement tiles, ceramic tiles & metallic products e.g. Liquefied petroleum gas cylinders. Also, it undertakes testing of Chemical products such as unplasticized plastic pipes for drinking water, plastic conduits for electrical installations, facial tissue paper, polyethylene bags, paints and varnishes, melamine plastic tableware and various other control tests allied to the industries. Excluding the laboratory work, some outdoor works are also carried out such as verification of compression test machines, insitu density tests and plate bearing tests. |

The work of this laboratory is mainly for the purpose of Quality Control
of Omani Industrial products. The main functions of the laboratory is to
carry out the analysis of Omani products and similar imported products for
which Omani Standards, Specifications have been written. The purpose of
this analysis is to check that these products comply with specifications
written for them to ensure that only good quality products are in the market.
This laboratory has been equipped with the sophisticated machines and laboratory equipment imported from reputed overseas manufacturers. For example ELE Auto test 3000 kN compression testing machine used for compression strength of concrete cubes, Precast concrete blocks etc. etc. Llyod 50 kN Materials testing machine enabling to test light materials such as polyethylene bags, steel wires for fences for tensile strength and Elongation test. This machine is equipped with computerized data handling facilities. Excluding the direct service to the industries, the laboratory does a number of control tests on products brought by the Quality Control Department. Also the laboratory gives guidance and advices to both public and private sectors within its capability. The aim is to assist the development of industry and to protect the consumer's health, safety and the environment.
