APPLIANCES PRODUCTS TESTING LABORATORY As the Sultanate of Oman is growing rapidly both commercially and industrially, certain basic needs are absolutely required to keep in view the safety part of the consumer market. At this stage safety and security of products at the user end becomes is the main aspect. DAP lab is established to serve the consumer but also to safeguard the consumer from procuring the substandard products. Keeping all these in mind DAP lab is eventually carrying out mainly safety tests on the widest possible range of electrical domestic appliances [water heater, batteries, electrical wiring cables light fittings refrigeration equipment etc] and also gas-related equipment and installations [gas cookers, heaters gas manifolds, regulators couplings shielded cables] as per the appropriate tests mentioned below. The main function of the laboratory is to carry out the analysis of Omani products and similar imported products for which Omani Standards, Specifications have been written. The purpose of this analysis is to check that these products comply with specifications written for them to ensure that the safety and security side of the products are ensured to provide only good quality products are in the market. Excluding the direct service to the industries and consumers, the laboratory does a number of control tests on products brought by the Quality Control Department. Also the laboratory gives guidance and advises to both public and private sectors within its capability thus ensuring the protection against consumer's safety and the environment. The laboratory has been equipped with the necessary machines and digital instruments to perform the tests as detailed. All the testing instruments are periodically calibrated with Metrology laboratory to keep up the standard of testing. Name of the tests conducted: Visual examination, Dimensions Rated Capacity Electrical Shock Test, Insulation Test, Leakage Current Test Pressure Test, Actual Capacity Test, Leakage Test Voltage Test, Current Test, Power input Test Cooling Capacity Tests, Volume Test Cable resistance Test, Construction Test Testing at these Laboratories is one of the most versatile activities where confidential product testing and analytical services are provided for the Government as well as private parties at very competitive and cost effective charges, in different areas of engineering and technology , such as food and food products, chemicals and chemical products, building materials, textiles, electrical, mechanical and metallurgical products…etc. Test reports are issued and when requested, technical opinion and advice can also be provided The work of these laboratories is basically geared towards the main functions of quality control and quality assurance of domestic and imported products, The Ministry of Commerce & Industry and the DGSM drive towards quality assurance consumer guidance and consumer protection, industrial development and self reliance. A large number of samples of domestic and imported products are regularly and periodically tested to check their conformity to the performance, health and safety requirements of the Omani / GCC/ International Standards. While the above laboratories have been essentially set up as backup for activities relating to quality evaluation, certification and conformity assessment, consumer guidance and consumer protection, they also give important and invaluable assistance for: - The Omani industry and products to maintain competitiveness in domestic and international market and to keep pace with developments the world over - Generating data, as vital input for formulation and review of Omani national standards and GCC standards. The competence of these laboratories is being continually upgraded as per the latest revised International Standard ISO/IEC 17025:1999. Since it is neither physically possible nor economically feasible to cover all the testing of each and every product in-house by these laboratories, these DGSM laboratories sometimes use services of outside laboratories (sub contracting). To ensure the competence of such outside subcontracting laboratories, a laboratory Recognition Scheme is being introduced to cover such laboratories and all the laboratories in Sultanate of Oman. This 'Laboratory Recognition Scheme' is expected to be a forerunner to the Omani Accreditation System for Laboratories and Conformity Assessment Bodies Operating in Oman. Schedule of Testing Facilities and Testing Charges for DGSM Laboratories To effectively assist and serve the clients and users of DGSM testing services, Schedules of Testing Facilities, Testing Charges, Testing Time and Testing Samples can be supplied on request.
