OF MINES AND QUARRIES The main functions of this department are - To issue various types of Permits and Leases for the exploration and exploitation of minerals after thorough scrutiny of the applications - To implement the Mining Law, rules, Permits and Safety regulations and to ensure, the adoption of correct procedures for the extraction of minerals, safety of their operations and the conservation of national resources. - To monitor mineral based projects owned wholly or partly by the Government of Oman to safeguard Govt. interests. - To maintain statistical records of the minerals produced and consumed locally or exported along with their values. Procedure for obtaining Permits & Mining Leases Mineral Exploration and exploitation in the Sultanate of Oman at present is being governed by the following documents: Minerals and Petroleum Law ---1974 Ministerial Decision -----1/1987 Proposed Minerals Permit Regulations--1979 Proposed safety Regulations --1979 The various types of Permits and Mining Leases, which are being granted at present, to the new applicants, depend upon the nature of the mining operations involved. Procedures for obtaining such Permits and Mining Leases are well defined. There are four categories of Permits/Leases: 1. Quarry Permit 2. Prospecting Permit 3. Exclusive Prospecting Permit 4.
