OF MINERAL EXPLORATION Department of Mineral Exploration's main activities are related to the detailed work after the prospect has been discovered by the preliminary survey conducted during geological surveys. 1. The activities of this department are - Detailed exploration of various prospects of metallic and non-metallic minerals - Detailed drilling of various prospects - Detailed mapping and sampling of various prospects - Detailed geological, ground geophysical and geochemical surveys of various prospects - Prefeasibility study for exploitation of selected minerals 2. Mineral Potential The various geological formations that make up the Sultanate of Oman show a significant degree of mineralization. It is in the Oman mountains, however, particularly in the Samail Ophiolite, that the greatest mineral potential is found. Table shows the mineral potential of the different regions of Oman. View Table 3. Metallic Mineral Deposits Among the metallic minerals, only copper, chromite and gold are known in commercial quantities in the Sultanate of Oman. Oman Mining Co. is looking after the exploitation of copper and gold whereas Oman Chromite Co. is mining and exporting chromite. The exploration work for the metallic minerals at present, however, is being carried out by the Directorate Generals of Minerals or their contractors, or through collaboration with Japan International Co-operation Agency, (JICA) Japan. Recently, however, the Directorate General of Minerals have prepared six concession blocks in the north of Oman for bidding by the private Cos. for copper and gold exploration. Details of these concession blocks are available. View Map. Potential for diamond is also indicated in Haushi-Huqf area after the airborne magnetic survey was completed. View Map 4. Industrial Rocks and Minerals The Directorate General of Minerals has given special attention to the development of industrial rocks and minerals in the Sultanate. There are already many industries in the Sultanate, which are based on the locally available industrial rocks and minerals. View Map. In addition to that, the Directorate General of Minerals produced the following publications to help facilitate the development of industrial rocks and minerals in the Sultanate. - Industrial rocks and minerals report and map containing the minerals and rocks discovered so far - Handouts for Limestone, Silica Sand/Quartzite, Attapulgite, Dolomite, Gypsum, and Kaolin for potential projects.
